The MU Student Center is the everyday hub of campus life. It is a place where students connect, recharge and get involved. Located at the heart of Mizzou, it brings together dining, study spaces, campus services and event venues in one vibrant, accessible space. From casual gatherings to large programs and student organization meetings, it serves as a central point for connection and engagement.
1963: Brady Commons
The story of the MU Student Center begins with Brady Commons, a facility built to meet the needs of a rapidly growing university. By the late 1950s, enrollment at the University of Missouri had increased dramatically, creating demand for a dedicated student gathering space. Construction on Brady Commons began in 1961 and was completed in 1963. Named in honor of Thomas Allan Brady, former dean and professor of history, the building quickly became a center for recreation, social activity and student engagement.
1981: Major Renovation
As campus continued to grow, so did the need for additional space and services. Brady Commons underwent a major renovation in 1981, adding updated public spaces including a dance floor, food court and expanded lounge areas. An eastward expansion in 1985 created additional room for student organizations, student life programs and support services. A 1996 addition further expanded bookstore operations. Despite these improvements, demand continued to outpace capacity, with more than 10,000 students using the building each day.
2002-05: Students Shape the Future
By the 1990s and early 2000s, campus studies and student feedback consistently highlighted the need for more student organization space, study areas, dining options and gathering spaces. More than 200 students participated in focus groups in 2002, helping define a vision for a student center that was brighter, more open and easier to navigate.
That vision became reality in 2005, when MU students approved a fee increase through a referendum supporting the renovation and expansion of Brady Commons. The initiative received the largest voter turnout in student government history, and later that year the University of Missouri Board of Curators unanimously approved the project.
2006-10: Building a New Student Center
Construction officially began with a groundbreaking in Fall 2006. The project was completed in phases to ensure students could continue accessing important campus services throughout construction.
January 2009 | Phase I Opens
The first phase introduced a major new addition alongside the existing Brady Commons building, bringing the University Bookstore, Center for Student Involvement, Leadership Lounge and temporary dining facilities into the new space.
August 2010 | Phase II Opens
Opening six months ahead of schedule, Phase II completed the transformation with expanded dining venues, fireplaces, study spaces and more than 600 additional seats for students. The building also became home to many essential student services and offices, helping establish the Student Center as a comprehensive hub for campus life.
October 22, 2010 | Formal Dedication
During Homecoming weekend, the MU Student Center was officially dedicated, celebrating the transformation of Brady Commons into a modern center for student life and engagement at Mizzou.
Today: The Heart of Mizzou
Since its transformation in 2010, the MU Student Center has continued to serve as a destination where Mizzou traditions, student services and campus experiences come together.
