Your safety is our top priority of the Missouri Student Unions. In any emergency, remain calm, follow instructions from emergency personnel and building staff, and use the guidance below to respond quickly and safely.
MU Alert Emergency Notifications
The University of Missouri sends emergency notifications through the MU Alert System, which may include:
- Text messages
- Desktop notifications
- Alertus beacons
- Other emergency communication tools
Always follow instructions provided through MU Alert, as emergency situations can change rapidly.
In an emergency

Call 911 for emergencies requiring immediate police, fire or medical assistance.

Follow directions from emergency responders, Missouri Student Unions staff and the MU Alert system.

Assist others if it is safe to do so.

Do not use elevators during a fire evacuation unless directed by emergency personnel.

If you have a disability or need assistance, notify emergency personnel or a nearby individual who can assist.
Fire or Building Evacuation
If you discover a fire:
- Activate the nearest fire alarm.
- Move to a safe location and call 911.
- Evacuate the building using the nearest safe exit.
- Close doors behind you if possible.
- Do not use elevators.
Assembly Locations
- Memorial Student Union: Lowry Mall, between Stewart Hall and Stanley Hall
- MU Student Center: Kuhlmann Court at Hitt Street and Rollins Street
East side of MizzouRec
If instructed, regroup at Stankowski Field
Remain at the assembly area until emergency personnel or building officials provide an all-clear.
Tornadoes & Severe Weather
When a tornado warning is issued or sirens sound:
If indoors
- Move to an interior hallway or lower level of the building.
- Stay away from windows and glass.
- Avoid large open spaces such as auditoriums.
- Individuals with mobility impairments may use elevators during tornado sheltering.
If outdoors
- Seek shelter inside a building immediately.
- If no shelter is available, lie flat in a low-lying area and protect your head and neck.
Remain sheltered until officials announce that the threat has passed.
Medical Emergencies
If someone needs immediate medical assistance:
- Call 911.
- Provide the building name, room location and nature of the emergency.
- Do not move the injured person unless they are in immediate danger.
- Stay with the individual until help arrives if it is safe to do so.
Hazardous Materials or Chemical Spills
If you encounter a chemical, biological or other hazardous material release:
- Leave the affected area immediately.
- Avoid contact with the substance.
- Notify building staff and emergency responders.
- Follow evacuation or shelter instructions.
- Do not attempt to clean up hazardous materials unless properly trained.
Bomb Threats or Other Threatening Situations
If you receive or become aware of a threat:
- Notify MU Police (573-882-7201) immediately.
- Follow instructions from law enforcement and the MU Alert system.
- Do not touch suspicious packages or objects.
- Do not evacuate unless directed by emergency personnel.
Information for Individuals Requiring Assistance
Individuals who may need assistance during an emergency are encouraged to develop a personal emergency plan and familiarize themselves with evacuation and sheltering options in buildings they use regularly.
Possible options include:
- Evacuating using stairs when able
- Moving to another safe area of the building
- Waiting in a designated Area of Refuge or Evacuation Waiting Area
- Remaining in a protected location and calling 911
- Using evacuation devices with trained assistance when available
